Hiroshi Tsuuji Katamigawari Irabo chawan

A katamigawari irabo tea bowl by the Kyoto ceramic artist Tsūji Hiroshi.
The body, subtly distorted in form and shaped with a pooling hollow at the front, is divided between two glazes: irabo glaze and ido glaze. In places, the irabo glaze develops a strong green tone, while the transparent ido glaze allows the character of the clay to emerge. Where the two overlap, the surface shifts into a faint bluish white, creating a layered landscape of three distinct expressions.

Around the foot, both the ido glaze and the overlapping areas show traces of kairagi, while inside the bowl the same three-part coloration appears beneath a series of hansuji brush marks. The sweetly modeled foot, together with the especially animated view around its side, forms a remarkable scene in itself. Details such as stone bursts and wheel marks resembling fine linear ridges reveal the artist’s careful attention throughout the piece.
