Daniel Seko Kuro Chawan

New Black Chawan by Czech ceramic artist Daniel Seko, based in Kunštát.
This work is made using highly refractory local clay from Kunštát, blended with raw Bohemian clay rich in silica, and finished with a high-iron glaze that gives the piece its deep black tone.

Distinctive kiln effects unique to wood firing emerge throughout the surface, while feldspar glaze applied in two areas—inside and out—creates striking white patterns that add depth and character. The interior is gently accented with ash glaze, lending subtle variation to the bowl’s appearance.

Particular highlights include the carefully carved foot, slightly recessed with great precision, as well as the kiln effects that appear around it—details that reveal both technical mastery and sensitivity. This piece conveys the artist’s skill and passion, along with a deep respect for the tradition of the Japanese tea bowl.
