tk004
Kuro-Oribe Hira Chawan by Takayuki Kani

An original work that combines lustrous black glaze with vivid red overglaze decoration. The broad, gently flaring form of this Hira Chawan features a deep black glaze across its front, with bold incised lines adding a sense of strength and character. Along the side, intricately painted floral and geometric patterns emerge in red, accented by touches of green, blue, and yellow that bring a lively richness to the composition.

Both the black glaze and the red pigment are derived from the same raw material, known as Oniita, an iron-rich natural clay. Despite sharing the same origin, these contrasting colors reveal remarkably different expressions within a single Chawan.

Inside the Chawan, bold red overglaze decoration spreads across the surface, intertwining with the black glaze to create a complex, painterly landscape. The gently undulating rim also brings a natural sense of movement to its low, expansive form.

The unconventional idea of introducing vibrant red overglaze decoration into traditional Kuro Oribe ware reflects the spirit of Oribe, embracing creativity beyond established conventions. As the viewing angle changes, the substantial presence of the black glaze gives way to the brilliance of the red decoration, revealing a richly varied and expressive Hira Chawan.

Width: 15.3 cm / Height: 6.4 cm

With the original signed wooden box and matching cloth.
(We will ship within 3 business days after completing your order.)
Click here for an interview with Takayuki Kani

You can add a digital certificate to this product for free.
If you wish, please select "Attach a CERT (digital certificate)" from the tab below.
Click here for information on CERT (digital certificate).

Click here for a list of Takayuki Kani's works.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0563/0630/3147/files/DSC_5435_fb2313f6-b955-471a-92bf-41943e804070.jpg?v=1793286776
