tk003
Kuro-Oribe Chawan by Takayuki Kani

Takayuki Kani's Kuro ORIBE Chawan, created at his studio in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture.

This striking work is distinguished by the contrast between its powerful black glaze and vivid red overglaze decoration. Intricately painted floral and geometric patterns are boldly combined with the deep, lustrous black surface, while touches of green, blue, and yellow add a sense of vibrancy and richness.

Particularly fascinating is the fact that both the black glaze and the red pigment are derived from the same raw material, known as Oniita, an iron-rich natural clay. Despite sharing the same origin, they produce remarkably contrasting colors within a single Chawan. The substantial texture of the black glaze and the delicate brushwork of the red decoration complement one another, creating a distinctive visual landscape.

The boldly undulating rim and powerful, expressive form are also among the highlights of this piece. Red overglaze decoration extends into the interior, revealing another richly colored world when viewed from above.

The unconventional idea of combining traditional Kuro Oribe ware with vibrant red overglaze decoration reflects the spirit of Oribe, which embraces creativity beyond established conventions. With its striking contrasts of black and red, weight and brilliance, this is a truly original and remarkable Chawan.

Width: 13.2 cm / Height: 9 cm

With the original signed wooden box and matching cloth.
(We will ship within 3 business days after completing your order.)
Click here for an interview with Takayuki Kani

You can add a digital certificate to this product for free.
If you wish, please select "Attach a CERT (digital certificate)" from the tab below.
Click here for information on CERT (digital certificate).

Click here for a list of Takayuki Kani's works.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0563/0630/3147/files/DSC_5342_2bdee9bf-8e7f-4d77-a773-9a052ac6e1d7.jpg?v=1793286264
