tkoo1
Hyakushido Chawan by Takayuki Kani

Takayuki Kani's Hyakushido Chawan, created at his studio in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture.

Inspired by an antique Ko-Imari yunomi (Japanese tea cup), this work features numerous figures dressed in vividly colored traditional garments, intricately painted across its white ceramic surface. The Hyakushido motif is sometimes said to depict gatherings associated with China's imperial civil service examinations or royal court, although various interpretations of its origins exist.

Using his own specially prepared overglaze pigments in red, blue, green, and yellow, Kani carefully portrays the individual expressions and gestures of each figure with delicate brushwork. Geometric patterns in underglaze blue decorate the rim and lower body, creating a harmonious balance between the lively gathering of figures and the refined decorative motifs. Together, these elements evoke the colorful elegance of traditional Ko-Imari porcelain.

While respecting classical designs, Kani brings a fresh sense of freedom and spontaneity to the composition, creating a charming Chawan filled with character and playful imagination.

Width: 10.5 cm / Height: 8.2 cm

With the original signed wooden box and matching cloth.
(We will ship within 3 business days after completing your order.)
Click here for an interview with Takayuki Kani

You can add a digital certificate to this product for free.
If you wish, please select "Attach a CERT (digital certificate)" from the tab below.
Click here for information on CERT (digital certificate).

Click here for a list of Takayuki Kani's works.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0563/0630/3147/files/DSC_5184_faeb14e7-402e-4425-98eb-1b71b34c4084.jpg?v=1793279733
